Taiwan’s Animal Emergency Rescue Team received reports two nights in a row of incidents of well-trained dogs attacking street cats on Renyi Street and Dengfa Elementary School in Renwu District, Kaohsiung City, and in the area of Lane 118, Tuku Road, Nanzi District. At least two street cats were bitten and thrown to death.

Taiwan Animal Emergency Rescue Team reported that eyewitnesses said that the dogs chasing cats were never seen in ordinary community alleys, and were well-trained. They were silent when hunting.

It was reported that the incident first occurred near Dengfa Elementary School on Renyi Street, Renwu District, on the evening of the 19th. People checked the surveillance cameras and found that about 12 well-trained dogs attacked a street cat in a group. In the early morning of the 20th, a similar case occurred in the area of Lane 118, Tuku Road, Nanzi District. People went out to check after hearing the screams of the cat. They witnessed the group of dogs acting together, biting and throwing a street cat wildly, and still died in the hospital.

Allowing dogs to kill cats is a violation of the Animal Protection Law. Some netizens believe that intentional people deliberately want to cause conflicts between cats and dogs, making residents think that stray dogs are responsible. In this regard, Ni Jingtai, spokesperson of the emergency response group, also expressed the hope that the Kaohsiung City Animal Protection Office and the police would assist in reviewing the surveillance cameras and arrest the suspected cat-killing group.
